How to Unpair Your Apple Watch: A Simple Guide for All Users

Apple Watch is one of the most versatile and advanced smartwatches available today. From monitoring your health stats to helping you stay connected with calls, messages, and apps, it has made life easier and more productive. But what happens when its time to upgrade, sell, or just reset your device? Thats when knowing how to disconnect Apple Watch from iPhone becomes essential.

Unpairing an Apple Watch isnt just about breaking a connection. Its about safeguarding your data, ensuring smooth transitions, and avoiding potential issues like Activation Lock or data loss. Here are three effective methods to unpair your Apple Watch depending on your scenario.

Method 1: Use the Apple Watch App on iPhone

This is the safest and most recommended method.

Steps:

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.

  2. Tap All Watches at the top of the screen.

  3. Click the Info (i) button next to your watch.

  4. Select Unpair Apple Watch.

  5. Enter your Apple ID and password when prompted.

  6. Confirm to disable Activation Lock and begin unpairing.

This method creates a backup of your Apple Watch data, allowing you to restore it later if needed. Its ideal if you're switching to a new watch or phone.

Method 2: Unpair Directly from the Apple Watch

If your iPhone isnt available, you can unpair directly from the watch.

Steps:

  1. Go to Settings on your Apple Watch.

  2. Tap General > Reset.

  3. Select Erase All Content and Settings.

  4. If prompted, enter your passcode.

  5. If using a cellular model, choose to keep or remove your plan.

To complete this method, visit iCloud.com afterward:

  • Log in using your Apple ID.

  • Go to Settings > My Devices.

  • Click the X next to your watch name to remove it and disable Activation Lock.

Note: This method does not back up your data.

Method 3: Unpair Without Apple ID/Password

If youve forgotten your Apple ID or password, this is your only option.

Steps:

  1. Connect your Apple Watch to its charger.

  2. Press and hold the Side button until the power-off slider appears

  3. Press and hold the Digital Crown until you see the reset option

  4. Tap Erase All Content and Settings.

Once reset, the watch will no longer be paired, but Activation Lock may still be active. This method is best used when repurposing or selling a device with limited access.

What Happens When You Unpair Your Watch?

  • If unpaired using the iPhone app: Your watch data is backed up and saved to your iPhone.

  • If unpaired via the watch itself: It performs a factory reset with no backup.

  • Activation Lock: Must be disabled to pair the watch with another iPhone.

Why It Matters

Unpairing isnt just about disconnecting; its about security. If Activation Lock isnt removed properly, it can render your device useless for the next owner. Similarly, failing to back up your data means permanent loss of your fitness records, app preferences, and more.

So, before selling or resetting, ensure you follow the method that best suits your needs. Whether you prefer using the app or need a direct watch reset, understanding your options keeps your devices running smoothly.
